CUMMING -- High school students in Forsyth County can apply for college scholarships through the Cumming Chapter 1030 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

The application process is now open for the second annual round of college scholarships given out by the veterans group and have been sent to various public and private high schools, said Gary Ely, president of the group.

“The program is open to Forsyth County high school seniors who are U.S. citizens and the child, grandchild or great-grandchild of a U.S. military veteran,” Ely said.

Up to three scholarships will be awarded, two to eligible high school students and one to a military veteran wishing to attend an accredited two- or four-year post-secondary institution.

A third scholarship will be awarded to a local high school senior of a qualified military veteran is not chosen.

Each scholarship is named and presented in the memory of a Vietnam War combatant who was killed in action.

“We are pleased to once again reward local high school students for their scholastic excellence while simultaneously honoring the memory of our comrades who fell in service to our country,” Ely said.

The chapter’s first scholarships were given to Rachel Priest of Lambert High School and Ally Williams of Fideles Christian School.
