NORTH FORSYTH -- Locals will soon have a new way to climb Sawnee Mountain.

Forsyth County commissioners voted 5-0 to award the design and installation of a new climbing wall at Sawnee Mountain Preserve Visitors Center to Challenge Design Innovations for $59,998.

“They can have 10 people on them. They have all the requirements that [the] Parks and [Recreation Department] wanted, so it should be a really nice system,” Procurement Director Donna Kukarola said. “Sawnee EMC was gracious enough to donate four poles for this project that we will probably be using.”

Climbers will have to pay a fee to use the 40-foot wall, which will be used to fund other park projects.

The county had received a $60,000 donation for the project, and the wall should be completed by the end of March 2017.

A fence is included in the proposal to keep intruders off the wall when it is closed.
