Cumming American Legion hosting information session on veterans benefits Monday

CUMMING -- The local chapter of the American Legion is inviting veterans and their families to learn about programs from the state’s department of veteran services.

On Monday at 7 p.m., Cynthia Hayes, a field service officer with the department, will speak to Cumming Post 307 of the American Legion at the Georgia Army National Guard Armory, located at 100 Aquatic Circle.

“Many veterans are not aware of the benefits they have earned and [are] entitled [to] or know how to access the VA,” said John Arant, the chapter’s media officer, in a news release. “Membership in the American Legion can help direct them. The American Legion, the world's largest veterans’ organization, is open to any veteran who has served honorably during a wartime era.”

Hayes is a retired Army E-7 with more than 20 years of service and holds a psychology degree.

Arant said one matter to be discussed is the opening of an expanded VA clinic in Oakwood that is closer for local veterans to get service than the Decatur office and hospital.

Hs said veterans are also entitled to free license plates and driver's licenses, access to medical care – including medication and glasses – and two Georgia nursing homes, along with other benefits.
