Scholastic Student Spotlight: FCN intern taking steps toward future in journalism

Name: Matthew Hanley

School: Forsyth Central High School

Grade: Senior

GPA: 3.7

Classes: Currently enrolled in advanced composition, statistics, economics, newspaper and honors mentorship. “I have two free periods, which leaves me time to work a part-time job and attend an internship at the Forsyth County News. Until my senior year, I took many honors courses and AP English language.”

Next steps: “I plan to graduate high school and attend Kennesaw State University. I intend to earn my bachelor’s degree in communication and move on to find a job in the field of political journalism.”

In school: Honors mentorship program, which is a leadership building program that places students in real internships around the county; serves as a chief editor of the Central Scene, Central’s student newspaper.

Out of school: Volunteers for Forsyth County’s peer court system, which includes serving as a youth representative in real juvenile court hearings; works part-time at the Best Buy in Cumming.

Future goals: “I hope to discover myself outside of high school and develop a rich education that will earn me a job in the field of journalism.”
