The Chinese New Year is coming to a library in Forsyth County.

On Sunday, Feb. 5, the Post Road Library, in partnership with the Forsyth County Public Library’s Friends and Advocates, will bring Chinese culture and traditions to the community with a “One World Forsyth” event.

The event will celebrate the Chinese New Year, beginning at 1:45 p.m. with an interactive lion dance by Atlanta’s Chien Hong School of Kung Fu.

Attendees will be able to stay after the performance for crafts, Chinese candy and a fortune cookie.

Shi Fu Gary Mitchell, a Kung Fu teacher, said instructors and dancers from the Chien Hong School of Kung Fu will give a kid-friendly history of the lion dance and its place in Chinese folklore.

Shi Fu is a term used to address someone who achieves mastery of Kung Fu practice and teaches others.

Mitchell trained in Taipei, Taiwan, and opened the Chien Hong School of Kung Fu to teach children and adults the disciplines of Kung Fu, tai chi and self-defense.

“Lion dance is a traditional part of Chinese culture in which performers mimic a lion’s movements,” he said. “It is usually performed at festivals, but it is also commonly included in important occasions such as weddings, business openings or to honor special guests visiting Chinese communities.”
