Locals interested in getting involved with the Forsyth County Fire Department will soon have a chance.

The fire department is inviting the community to register for its Citizens’ Fire Academy, a 10-week program where attendees learn about the profession and its multiple divisions, equipment and training. Applications are due by Feb. 21.

“Our personnel are passionate about their jobs and the role we play in the community — and what better way of sharing that than by educating our citizens through a series of hands-on courses?” said Fire Chief Danny Bowman in a news release. “Fire department staff look forward to welcoming a new group of enthusiastic citizens this spring.”

The academy is open to those 25 and older who do not have a felony conviction, can pass a background check and are citizens of the county.

It will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m. for 10 consecutive Tuesdays between March 7 and May 9 at the the Forsyth County Public Safety Complex, located at 3520 Settingdown Road.

Space in the program is limited and will be given on first-come, first-served basis pending the background check.

Applicants need to submit a completed application, signed and notarized liability release and a signed notarized confidentiality agreement, all of which are available at the fire department’s webpage on Forsythco.com.

Those who fax or email applications must keep the original copy to be submitted at the first meeting. Faxes can be sent to (678) 513-5950 and emails to RLTaylor@forsythco.com.
