Earlier this year, three Forsyth County students received money from the Joe Dumphy Memorial Golf Scholarship, but the hope is many more students will become recipients. Organizers are looking for participants and sponsors for the second annual Joe Dumphy Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 23 at Chestatee Golf Club in Dawsonville. The tournament will raise funds for the scholarship in the North Forsyth High School golfer’s memory.

“Our goal is to make the make the scholarship perpetual,” said Deb Dumphy, mother of the late freshman. “We’re still about $12,000 away from getting the scholarship where it would be perpetual.” Joe Dumphy was a rising sophomore when he and his grandparents were involved in a head-on collision as they were leaving Chestatee Golf Club. Both he and his grandfather were killed in the crash. His mother said the tournament would include raffle tickets, several extras for the golf game and lunch from Moe’s — Joe Dumphy’s favorite restaurant.

“It is a scramble event,” she said. “For $125, the golfers will have the scramble golf tournament, then they will also be given a couple of mulligans ... and then a three-foot piece of string to, what they call, ‘string it out.’ “For example, if they’re two inches inside a sand trap, they can use two of that 36 inches to get out of the sand trap.” Registration is still open for $125 for players and $250 for hole sponsors, which Deb Dumphy said would be open to individuals, families and businesses. “There is the opportunity for anyone that would like to be a hole sponsor,” she said. “If a family would like to be a sponsor in memory of Joe or a business would like to be a sponsor, we’re offering a sponsorship for all of the holes.” One hole that quickly sold was Hole 17, or Joe’s Hole, which Joe Dumphy scored a pair of hole-in-ones on. In the first year, a $5,000 scholarship went to West Forsyth High School golfer Drew Ridings, and two smaller ones went to Adam Gracyalny of South Forsyth and Spencer Ball from Lambert high schools.

“This is our largest fundraiser for the scholarship fund,” Dumphy said. “Our plan was to offer one $5,000 scholarship, but just in the first year of doing this, we were able to give one $5,000 scholarship and two $1,000 scholarships.” In June, the inaugural Joe Dumphy Memorial Classic was held at the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club in Flowery Branch. Dumphy said the tournament was meant to represent Joe and his legacy. “Joe was about having fun; competitive, but having fun,” she said. “I know he’s going to be looking down over all of the players on that day and just enjoying the fun and the laughter that everyone is going to be having in this type of event.
