City of Cumming sets dates, fees for election qualifying
Cumming

With national elections behind us, the city of Cumming is getting ready for its own races.

At a meeting on Tuesday, the Cumming City Council voted unanimously to set fees and dates for this fall’s election for mayor and two city council positions. City Clerk Jeff Honea said the fees are based on a percentage of each office’s earnings.

“They are set by the state as 3 percent of the salary of the office,” he said.

An election was not held in 2013 for the seats as Gravitt, Holton and then-Post 2 Councilman Rupert Sexton were the only candidates to qualify.

Welch first earned his seat in 2015 after a special election to fill the unexpired term of retiring Sexton.

Also in 2015, Lewis Ledbetter of Post 3, Christopher Light of Post 4 and Linda Ledbetter of Post 5 were elected to four-year terms.

Light took over the seat held by former Councilman Ralph Perry and Linda Ledbetter took over for Councilman John D. Pugh. Lewis Ledbetter did not face opposition for the seat he has held since 1971.

According to the city’s code, a candidate must be over 21 and have lived in the city for over a year before the election and be a qualified voter in the city.

If an office is contested, the top vote-getter will be declared winner, and no runoff would be held for close races, as is the case in some other municipalities.
